Westfield State student found dead in town park

A 19-year-old Westfield State University student was found dead in a local park over the weekend, college officials said.

Kevin Friedland, of Marshfield, was found in Westfield’s Stanley Park Sunday morning. Police do not suspect foul play, said Elizabeth H. Preston, the college’s president in a statement today.

“We extend our deepest sympathies to Kevin’s family and friends for their profound loss,’’ she wrote in the statement. “It is heartbreaking to lose a member of our community, and we are all affected by Kevin’s death.’’

Friedland’s father, Stephen, said his family was shocked by the loss. He said his son was a fun-loving kid, who loved to make you laugh.

“Everyone who got to know him loved him,’’ he said in a telephone interview today. “He was just a really nice, kind kid.’’

He said he would miss watching the Bruins with his son, who was a huge hockey fan.

Friends of Friedland took to Twitter to offer condolences.

“You were an an amazing, funny. sweet guy and you will be miss[ed] so much. My prayers go out to the Friedland family,’’ wrote Mariah Thompson.

Jesse Graziano described the sophomore as a “kid with a heart of gold.’’

Friedland was studying biology. The cause of his death is under investigation by State Police and Westfield police, said college officials.
