US News ranks top graduate programs
US News and World Report released its 2015 rankings of the best business, medical, law, and online graduate programs today. Check out the Massachusetts graduate programs that made the list.
US News ranks top business schools
US News ranked the top MBA programs of 2015 in a list released this week. The top spot was a three-way tie between Harvard Business School, Stanford University in California, and University of Pennsylvania Wharton School.
While Harvard Business School ranks first, the US News list ranks Massachusetts Institute of Technology’s Sloan School of Management at postition no. 5.
US News ranks top graduate education programs
US News gave the top graduate education program nod to Johns Hopkins University in Maryland with an overall score of 100. Vanderbilt University in Tennessee ranks second (overall score 97), while the Harvard Graduate School of Education ranks third with an overall score of 96.
But according to the US News rankings, the differences between Harvard and Johns Hopkins are huge according to the class of 2013’s doctoral acceptance rate. Johns Hopkins boasts 29.1 percent doctoral acceptance rank for its 2013 class, while Harvard only had 6 percent of its 2013 graduating class accepted.
The next highest ranked Massachusetts program is the Lynch School of Education at Boston College at no. 24 out of 116. University of Massachusetts – Amherst College of Education is no. 42.
US News ranks top schools of engineering
US News awards MIT’s School of Engineering the no. 1 spot with an overall score of 100. That’s seven points ahead of no. 2 Stanford School of Engineering with a score of 93.
Other Massachusetts graduate engineering programs ranked out of 94 on the US News list include Harvard School of Engineering and Applied Sciences (no. 24), and Boston University College of Engineering (no. 40), The College of Engineering at UMass Amherst (no. 60), and Tufts University School of Engineering (no. 71).
US News ranks top law schools
The US News ranking of the top law schools in 2015 put Yale Law School in Connecticut at the no. 1 spot with an overall score of 100. Harvard Law School falls in second place with an overall score of 96, but a matching peer assessment score of 4.8.
Out of the 146 programs listed, Boston University School of Law ranks at no. 27, and Boston College Law School ranks at no. 36. New England Law School fell in the “a second-tier school’’ category with a peer ranking of 1.5 out of 5. Suffolk University Law School in Boston was also listed as “second-tier’’ scoring 2.0 out of 5.
Best medical schools for research
For the medical school ranking, US News broke programs into two categories: Top schools for research and top schools for primary care.
US News ranked Harvard Medical School first for the research category with an overall score of 100. Following 10 points behind with an overall score of 90 was Stanford University School of Medicine.
Other Massachusetts programs that made the list of 56 included Boston University School of Medicine at no. 32. Tufts University School of Medicine tied with University of Massachusetts Medical School in Worcester at no. 49.
Best medical schools for primary care
US News gave the top medical school for primary care spot to the University of Washington School of Medicine with an overall score of 100. University of Massachusetts Medical School in Worcester pulled in the no. 5 spot for primary care with a score of 79 out of 100, outranking Harvard Medical School (no. 11). Boston University ranks at no. 35 out of the total list of 57, in tie with Mayo Medical School in Minnesota.
For the total medical school ranking list, including rankings for primary care and research, US News evaluated the 128 medical schools fully accredited by the 2013 Liaison Committee on Medical Education, as well as 25 schools of osteopathic medicine accredited by the American Osteopathic Association.
Best online graduate programs
Boston University’s online MBA program is the highest ranked in Massachusetts, falling in at no. 8 out of 58. University of Massachusetts – Amherst (Isenberg school) ranks at no. 27. (It holds that spot as a five-way tie between Florida International University, Rutgers—New Brunswick and Newark, University of South Dakota, and West Texas A&M University).
In online computer information technology, Boston University ranks at no. 2, quite a bit behind the University of Southern California, which landed the top spot with a score of 100. No other Massachusetts online graduate programs made the list.
In online graduate education programs, Northern Illinois University was the top-ranked online graduate program in this category. University of Massachusetts—Amherst made the list at slot no. 42 out of 55, and tied five-ways with Old Dominion University in Virginia, Roosevelt University in Illinois, University of Arkansas—Fayetteville, and Valley City State University in North Dakota.
In online graduate nursing programs, University of Massachusetts—Amherst ranks at no. 3 for online graduate nursing programs, behind St. Xavier University (IL) a no. 1 and Medical University of South Carolina at no. 2.
According to the US News methodology, online graduate programs were ranked by training and credentials of faculty, success at promoting student engagement, selectivity of admissions process, services and tech available to distance learners, as well as opinions of deans and academic peers at other distance learning programs.
