Plymouth police officer killed in serious motorcycle accident

A Plymouth police officer died after sustaining serious injuries in a motorcycle accident on Tuesday evening, according to several news reports.

Stories from WCVB and Fox 25 indicated that Plymouth Police had confirmed the death of Officer Gregg Maloney following the accident on Samoset Street in Plymouth.

The Boston Globe reported that Plymouth Police Chief Mike Botieri said in a press conference that Maloney, 43, was married with two children.

From the Globe:

The officer, 43-year-old Gregg Maloney, who was married and the father of two teenage boys, was a 17-year veteran of the Plymouth Police Department and a member of the motorcycle unit since 2009, Botieri said.

"The next several days and weeks will be difficult for this department," he said.

According to the Globe, Botieri added that the cause of the crash was still under investigation, but that “there’s nothing evident at the scene telling us what happened.’’

Earlier reports had indicated that his injuries were serious, including a story from WCVB that said Botieri said “it doesn’t look good.’’

WBZ-TV had reported that, after initially being taken to Beth Israel Deaconness Hospital in Plymouth, the officer was flown by a medical helicopter to Massachusetts General Hospital in Boston.
