Six nurses from Massachusetts General Hospital will be running in this year’s Boston Marathon in honor of the patients they treated after last year’s bombing, WBZ reports.

These nurses see trauma every day but the marathon was different. "You don't usually see the type of injuries that these patients were coming in with and it was, it was kind of horrible," explained [nurse Emily] Erhardt.

The team of ICU nurses (Emily Erhardt, Meredith Salony, Chelsey McGinn, Allyson Mendonza, Laura Lux, and Katherine Pyrek) were helping critically injured patients from the Marathon last year and turned to running to deal with the emotions from the aftermath of the bombing.

"The running has definitely been one of my outlets because I feel like I can run and all the emotions and everything … I can just kind of pound them away in a sense," said Laura Lux.

This will be the first marathon for five of the six nurses. All of them are helping raise money for various charities.
