, Boston Globe win Pulitzer

The full staff of the Boston Globe,, and won the Pulitzer Prize for breaking news reporting for coverage of the Boston Marathon bombings in April 2013.

The announcement was made Monday afternoon, one day before the anniversary of the bombings that killed three and injured 264 others, and one week before the running of the 2014 Boston Marathon.

The Pulitzer committee credited the Globe’s award to their “exhaustive and empathetic coverage’’ of the tragic attack and for its use of “photography and a range of digital tools’’ to bring information to readers.

The award, given by Columbia University and considered to be the highest honor in journalism, is the Globe’s seventh in 12 years, the newspaper said. It is the Globe’s 23rd overall, and its first for breaking news coverage.

After hearing the news, the Globe newsroom held a moment of silence for the bombing victims.
