Chelsea man faces drunken driving charges after crashing car into Everett dam

A Chelsea man is facing drunken driving charges after he crashed his car into the Amelia Earhart Dam in Everett Thursday night, prompting police dive teams to search the Mystic River for other victims who turned out not to exist, State Police said.

The 26-year-old driver was transported to Massachusetts General Hospital for evaluation, according to State Police spokesman David Procopio. No other injuries were reported, and the vehicle was recovered from the water.

The man, whose name has not yet been released, is to be arraigned later this week in Malden District Court on several charges, including driving under the influence, negligent operation of a vehicle, trespassing, and destruction of property, Procopio said.

State Police received reports that a white Toyota SUV had crashed into the dam and was resting in the waters of Mystic River at 11:10 p.m., officials said. Both State Police and Boston police searched the nearby waters.

“The male operator was extremely intoxicated,’’ Procopio said.

Everett firefighters and police also responded to the crash.
