Sure, everyone loves Boston street performance superstar Keytar Bear. But after two assaults forced the furry favorite into hibernation this week, will Bostonians still put their money where their mouths are to support him?
Let’s put it this way: Does a bear play keytar on the T?
An IndieGoGo campaign with a goal of raising $2,500 for the furloughed busker received that amount in less than 24 hours, organizer Abigail Taylor said.
“I initially wanted to get him a new keytar, and I saw they were around $2,000,’’ she said, noting the bear’s titular instrument had been damaged by one of his attackers. “IndieGoGo collects a fee, so I added $500 to make sure we had enough.’’
Now it looks like they’ll have a lot more than that: as of 7 p.m. Wednesday, over 150 donors had contributed more than $3,360 to the cause.
The collection will continue through May 9. Taylor said the full amount, after IndieGoGo fees, will go to Keytar Bear.
“I just want [Keytar Bear] to know how much Boston supports what he does,’’ she said. “That’s my goal.’’
Taylor is also hosting a fundraising concert starting at 6 p.m. Thursday, May 8 at Workbar in Cambridge’s Central Square, featuring the star himself. Those interested in donating food or drinks to the event can contact Taylor through the Facebook event page.
