Lowell Man, 76, Charged in Nursing Home Sexual Assault

A 76-year-old Lowell man was ordered held on bail Monday for allegedly sexually assaulting a female nursing home resident with dementia while he was there to visit his wife, the Lowell Sun reports.

Raul Cardenas, of 546 Father Morissette Blvd., Unit C, had his bail set at $1,000 cash after pleading not guilty in Lowell District Court to a charge of indecent assault and battery on a person with an intellectual disability.

Cardenas was ordered to stay away from the victim and Judge Thomas Brennan said he can only visit his wife, who has dementia, under supervision.

Police were called to the Fairhaven Healthcare Center on Sunday after a staff member, who allegedly witnessed the sexual assault, reported the incident.

A prosecutor said the victim suffers from dementia and other disorders, and staff members told police that Cardenas allegedly appeared to have watched and followed the woman.

Cardenas will return to court on June 10 for a probable cause hearing.
