Plane in Flames at Logan Turns Out to be a Training Exercise

An image of a burning plane at Logan Airport shared over social media raised concerns this morning. It turns out it was another Massport training exercise.

The Massachusetts Port Authority confirmed to they are conducting a training exercise at the airport this morning. An image of the fiery plane was taken by the Travel Channel’s Andrew Zimmern and is circulating on Twitter.

Reached this morning by, Matt Brelis, a spokesman for Massport said: “The fire is not on the tarmac it’s on the airfield. This is something we do 3-4 times a week for training. It’s really not such a big deal.’’ Brelis also said Massport would “probably release something on it later today since it got so much attention.’’

As of 11:30 this morning Massport did not comment on today’s training exercise on Twitter or on their website.

Today’s training exercise is the second at Logan in a matter of months that has sparked concern on social media. On September 11, 2013 – twelve years to the day after 9/11 – another training exercise that involved smoke on the Logan airfield was called “just dumb’’ by Massachusetts Governor Deval Patrick. Massport apologized then for not having made an announcement.
