The Gulfstream IV business jet that crashed and killed seven at Hanscom Field reportedly has an excellent safety record. Only one other jet of this kind has crashed during take-off.
According to the Boston Globe: “The only other fatal crash involving a takeoff took place on Oct. 30, 1996, at the Palwaukee Municipal Airport in Wheeling, Ill.’’ In that instance, the plane became engulfed in flames and four passengers were killed.
The jets are equipped with two engines, one of which is strong enough to allow take-off if the other fails, according to the Globe.
