It’s official: state taxpayers will foot the bill for park improvements in East Sandwich that were voted down by the town’s own residents last May.

Gov. Deval Patrick signed the state budget into law Friday morning, which included $500,000 in funding for synthetic turf field improvements at the Capt. Gerald F. “Jerry’’ DeConto Veterans Memorial Stadium.

Senate President Therese Murray, of Plymouth, inserted the cost into the state budget, which was then approved in a vote Monday.

DeConto, who grew up on Cape Cod and was killed during the September 11 attacks, “deserved to be honored,’’ Murray told the Cape Cod Times.
