Heroin Deaths on the Rise Across Massachusetts

With towns like Scituate seeing overdoses on the rise, many fear the consequences of increased drug use across all incomes and regions in the state, The Boston Globe reports.

According to The Globe, Scituate has seen five opioid-related deaths this year and state and local officials have found heroin use reaching into “all income groups and across all town boundaries.’’ As the drug’s popularity has expanded, so have the unfortunate results.

The number of overdoses treated in the South Shore Hospital emergency room in Weymouth has risen 80 percent since 2011. The hospital, with a service area that includes Scituate, is treating an average of 45 overdoses a month this year, compared with 25 in 2011, according to emergency room data.
