The New Hampshire teen who went missing for nine months was present in the Conway courtroom Tuesday as her alleged kidnapper was arraigned.
Nathaniel Kibby, 34, was arrested Monday at his Gorham, N.H. home and has been charged with kidnapping 15-year-old Abigail Hernandez.
Hernandez returned to her family’s home last week and provided police with a sketch of her alleged kidnapper along with details that led police to Kibby’s home.
He was seen briefly glancing back at Hernandez after he entered the courtroom.
According to prosecutors, Kibby picked up Hernandez outside of her high school in October as she was walking home and released her on July 20. It’s unclear what led to her kidnapping or return. Prosecutors asked the judge for documents related to the case be sealed to the public since the investigation is ongoing.
At the arraignment Tuesday, he requested that the court provide him a lawyer.
Kibby is being held on $1 million cash bail, and is due back in court on August 12 for the probable cause hearing.
If convicted, Kibby could face up to seven years in prison.
