Quincy city officials have fined a Squantum homeowner $1,000 for allegedly running an illegal bed-and-breakfast out of his home.
According to The Patriot Ledger, complaints from neighbors led to police, fire and inspectional services arriving at the home at 85 Bayside Road on Friday. They issued the fine to homeowner Richard Cope, who is charged with violating zoning and building codes.
Director of Inspectional Services Director Jay Duca told The Ledger it was a building code violation because Copa “failed to change the occupancy,’’ or use, of the building.
A “no occupancy’’ order was posted to Copa’s front door, discouraging visitors and non-residents.
The home was previously listed on a lodging website called Airbnb.com, where, according to The Ledger, it stated the home “sleeps six guests and can be booked for two nights minimum at $150 per night.’’
The website showed that the home had been booked for 26 nights in August, 21 in September and nine in October, according to The Ledger. But Duca told The Ledger that “each day the violation exists constitutes a separate violation,’’ $1,000 per infraction.
Seems like it would be cheaper to just stop running the B&B.
