Bow-and-Arrow-Wielding Man Aims at Pigeon, Allegedly Hits 9-Year-Old Girl Instead

A Rhode Island man was arrested on Tuesday after his pigeon hunt went wrong.

Daniel King, 27, of Cranston, apparently thought it would be a good idea to dispatch a pigeon outside his home with his bow and arrow.

He did not hit the pigeon, but he did hit something. The arrow ricocheted off the ground and allegedly hit a 9-year-old girl in the back, according to the Associated Press.

That 9-year-old girl, Alexis “Lexi’’ Franco, reacted like an action hero, pulling the arrow out herself and walking home. A neighbor who witnessed the scene described her wound to WPRI as “a big hole’’ and said “she had blood dripping down her back.’’ Lexi Franco is tougher than you.

(Franco was later taken to a nearby hospital. She had no serious injuries and was discharged with a great story to tell her friends on the first day of school.)

When police arrived at King’s home (which, WPRI notes, is owned by his grandmother), King was not to be found. He soon arrived and told police “it was an accident. Is she okay?’’

A search warrant of King’s home turned up two crossbows and seven arrows, one of which was broken.

King was arrested and charged with felony assault with a dangerous weapon. He is being held for violating his probation, so Cranston’s pigeons and 9-year-old girls are safe for now.

EDITOR’S NOTE: An earlier version of this story included what was later deemed to be an insensitive headline, which has since been changed.
