Now that the forecast looks like the city probably won’t see the blizzard-like conditions that bring the Boston Yeti out to roam the streets again anytime soon, everyone’s favorite critter from the winter of 2015 is shifting gears and helping animals in need.
The Yeti just announced a campaign to raise money for the Massachusetts Society for the Prevention of Cruelty to Animals. All of the proceeds from the sales of Yeti swag like stickers, buttons and bookmarks will benefit the MSPCA’s Angell Animal Medical Center in Jamaica Plain.
The Yeti told The Associated Press via email:
‘‘I can think of no better way to spin one’s popularity than for the benefit of animals in need. … From the beginning of this unprecedented winter, I’ve been determined to channel the positive energy that surrounds me toward an important and worthwhile cause.’’
Earlier this month, the city’s famous snow monster hinted to Boston.com that such an initiative was underway, and that he’d be branching out and using his fame for the greater good. Ahead of another big announcement, which meant a guest cameo in the mayor’s St. Paddy’s breakfast video, the Yeti elaborated his charitable plans in an open letter:
I am beginning to shift my focus from tackling the quandaries of our inclement winter weather, to helping my fellow fur-covered friends who—much like me—traipse the streets of our great communities, wishing only to instill joy in those around them. This latter project should also make it possible for you all to find your inner Yeti while simultaneously supporting an important, local cause.
