School bus driver accused of driving drunk with students on board

A Cape Cod teenager called her mother from a school bus Friday evening—her bus driver was operating erratically, she said.

Her mother told her to get off at the next stop and called the police.

According to State Police, the driver, 62-year-old Everett W. Redmond Jr., of Brewster, was operating that way because he was drunk. Police located the bus in a Burger King parking lot, arrested Redmond, and charged him with operating under the influence (second offense) and child endangerment.

The five Cape Cod Regional Technical High School students still on board the bus were taken home by a different driver. The school’s superintendent, Robert Sanborn, said the student and her mother are “heroes,’’ the Associated Press reports.

A publicly listed number for Redmond was disconnected when called seeking comment Saturday, and it’s not known yet if he has a lawyer. He is expected to be arraigned Monday morning.
