It’s no secret that the Seaport District is trying to become Boston’s new hip neighborhood.

Dubbing it the “Innovation District,’’ former Boston Mayor Thomas M. Menino set about transforming the area into the city’s answer to the tech haven of Cambridge across the river. Where industrial docks once stood — and a muddy patch in the Harbor before that — architects and entrepeneurs have been encouraged to convert the area from parking lots and warehouses to startup accelerators and funky new eateries.
