Two Cape Cod men got drunk and left a German Shepherd puppy in their truck for about 10 hours on a hot summer evening, police said.

The little black puppy, which was frightened and distressed but otherwise unharmed, was found at about 3 a.m. Monday in a box covered with blue tarp, according to police in Barnstable, Massachusetts.

Justin Wagner and Matthew Bernier pleaded not guilty to charges of animal cruelty in the Barnstable District Court. Contact information for their lawyers wasn’t available.

The men had reported the truck stolen because they could not remember where they had left it, police said.

The puppy, which was nicknamed “Midnight’’ by police officers, has been handed over to Barnstable’s animal control officers. For anyone hoping to rescue “Midnight’’: we’re sorry to let you know she is currently not up for adoption, but is doing just fine.
