On Friday, Massachusetts State Police Trooper John Vasquez will meet the other Trooper Vasquez, a police horse who will be named in his honor.

Vasquez was wounded during a shootout with a man in Chicopee in a 2012 domestic incident. He was the first to respond to a call for help at a West Street apartment building.

Now, the program Heroes and Horses, which names police horses after injured officers and veterans, will name its newest horse after Vasquez. The horse will be donated to the Philadelphia Police Department’s mounted unit.

“It’s such a kind gesture. The fact that police officers get to benefit from this is just awesome,’’ Chicopee Police spokesman Michael Wilk told

Troop Vasquez will be the third horse the organization has named after Massachusetts officers. Last year, the organization named horses after officers David Benoit and Johnny Jusino, who were involved in the West Street shootout with Vasquez.
