Former hockey coach accused of sexually assaulting young player over 20 years ago

A former hockey coach has been accused of sexually assaulting a young player more than 20 years ago, according to the Suffolk County District Attorney’s Office.

Robert Richardson, 61, of Dorchester, has been indicted and charged with three counts of a rape of a child, authorities said. The alleged sexual assault began in 1991, when the victim was 13.

Richardson was the coach of a prestigious youth hockey team at the time and secured a spot on the team for the victim, according to the DA’s office. He invited the victim to spend several nights a week at his home, which is when the reported abuse began, authorities said.

Authorities said the victim told a family member about the abuse in his teens. He also told his high school hockey coach, authorities said, and the coach then dismissed Richardson from his informal participation with the team. Last year, the victim reported the sexual abuse to police, who began an investigation and have now indicted Richardson, according the DA’s office.

Richardson will be arraigned Thursday in Suffolk Superior Court.
