Two seriously injured in head-on Route 128 crash involving a wrong-way driver

A two-car, head-on crash involving a vehicle that was traveling the wrong way on Route 128 northbound in Lexington has left two people seriously injured.

The accident happened shortly at about 4:15 a.m., and involved a 2008 Hyundai Accent and a 2007 Chevrolet Cobalt, according to state police spokesman David Procopio.

The driver of the Accent, a 20 year-old Wayland woman, and the driver of the Cobalt, a 27-year-old Dracut man, were both taken to Lahey Clinic in Burlington with serious injuries, Procopio said.

Which car was traveling in the wrong direction is still under investigation, according to Procopio.

All lanes of Route 128 northbound reopened as of 7 a.m., according to state police. Only the breakdown lane was open in the area for several hours while investigators completed their work, he said.
