A temporary protection order has been issued to the 56-year-old woman who told police that “American Pie’’ singer Don McLean abused her, the Penobscot Bay Pilot reported.

Last week, McLean was charged with domestic violence assault after police were called to the singer’s home in Camden, Maine in the early morning hours of January 18.

According to a court document filed January 19, the victim told authorities that McLean “terrorized’’ her for hours on January 17 before she was able to escape into the bathroom, the Pilot reported.

According to his website, McLean lives on a 300-acre estate in Camden, Maine with his wife and two children. The Pilot did not name the victim, but said she told authorities she has suffered abuse previously during her 30-year-long relationship with McLean.

In a statement to authorities, the Pilot reported that the victim wrote:

“For the first 10 years or so, his rage was unfathomably deep and very scary – calling me horrible things like ‘hebe’ (I’m Jewish).’’

“Characteristically, he would squeeze my arms and legs hard enough to leave ugly bruises.’’

The protection order bars McLean from any direct or indirect contact with the victim.

McLean rose to fame as the result of “American Pie,’’ the 8-and-a-half minute song he wrote about the 1959 plane crash that killed rock-and-roll legend Buddy Holly.
