A Mass Bay Community College student was arrested Thursday after allegedly pointing a .40-caliber pistol at another driver on Route 9 in Wellesley, according to Wellesley police.
Ian Beagan, 25, of Allston, is being charged with assault with a dangerous weapon and possessing a firearm on school property.
Police said Beagan threatened the victim after he had slowed down for construction while in the left travel lane. The victim told police that Beagan, who was driving behind him, sounded his horn and made a profane hand gesture at him. Beagan then allegedly rolled down his window and displayed a handgun.
The victim wrote down Beagan’s licence plate number and reported the incident to an officer at the construction site.
Wellesley police said they reached out to the emergency communications center at the community college because of the school’s close proximity to the incident. The college confirmed the plate number matched that of Beagan.
Police removed Beagan from a scheduled class to question him. Beagan confirmed he had been involved in the road rage incident and did have the weapon in his car, police said. Beagan is licensed to possess a firearm in Massachusetts, according to police.
Beagan is expected to be arraigned Friday at Dedham District Court.
