A Maynard firefighter has been accused of raping a child in an incident that dates back more than 20 years, according to Maynard police.

James MacGillivary, 59, was arrested Thursday on the charge of rape of a child with force, police said. The assault allegedly occurred in 1991.

MacGillivary has served with the Maynard Fire Department since 1986. The accusations against him came earlier this month, and he was placed on leave on February 5 when police opened an investigation, police said. Town officials will hold a termination hearing for MacGillivary as soon as next week.

“This is a deeply disturbing case involving serious allegations,’’ Police Chief Mark Dubois said in a statement. “Our detectives conducted a thorough investigation, working with the Middlesex District Attorney’s Office, to determine the appropriate course of action.’’

MacGillivary will be arraigned Friday in Middlesex Superior Court.
