Red Line service resumes after third rail death at Alewife

A person died at Alewife Station Wednesday morning after coming in contact with the third rail, MBTA spokesman Joe Pesaturo confirmed to Boston.com.

The accident halted portions of Red Line service for more than two hours, forcing commuters to take buses between stations as authorities began an investigation of the incident.

The MBTA announced the suspension at 10:41 a.m. as a medical emergency. Outbound service was terminated at Davis Station, and shuttle buses were in place between Davis and Alewife stations. Alewife Station reopened and service was restored around 1 p.m.

The incident remains under investigation.
