Lowell man armed with meat cleaver, knife fatally shot by police

A Lowell man who allegedly threatened to kill people with a meat cleaver and large knife was fatally shot by two police officers Saturday night, according to the Middlesex District Attorney’s office.

Just before 11 p.m., police received two calls: One from a woman saying a knife-wielding man was threatening to kill people, and another from the man himself, claiming he was “going to kill everyone” and that police should be sent, according to the DA’s office.

At the scene, police found 39-year-old Jose Perez with a meat cleaver and another large knife, authorities said. Officers ordered Perez to drop the weapons, but he refused and advanced toward them, according to the DA’s office. The officers shot Perez, and proceeded to treat him along with additional personnel who were called to the scene, authorities said.

Perez was taken to Lowell General Hospital, where he was pronounced dead. In compliance with the Lowell Police Department’s policy, both officers have been placed on administrative leave while authorities investigate the shooting.
