Boston city officials temporarily shuttered a Roxbury Stop & Shop Monday after inspections uncovered poor sanitary conditions, including the presence of mice.
The branch of the grocery store chain is located at 460 Blue Hill Ave. According to Phil Tracey, a spokesperson for the company, the Boston Inspectional Services Department (ISD) closed the store after finding evidence of mice, which he says may have come from nearby construction activity.
“Regardless of the reasons, the conditions at this Stop & Shop store location are our responsibility,” Tracey said in an email statement. “We are cooperating with the Department and are making every possible effort to address the conditions and bring the store into compliance with our own high standards as quickly as possible.”
A sign posted to the store’s front door from the ISD said an “imminent health hazard” had led to the its immediate closure, according to The Boston Globe. The company said the Roxbury location will remain closed until employees remedy the violations and officials conduct a new inspection.
“We apologize for this inconvenience to our Roxbury customers and commit to do our very best to ensure that this situation does not reoccur,” Tracey said.
