Police: Suspect in Dorchester robbery hailed a cab to evade capture

A Dorchester bank robbery suspect that tried to hail a cab to evade police was apprehended on Friday, according to authorities.

Officers were responding to a reported robbery at the One United Bank on Warren Street when an onlooker pointed in the suspect’s direction, according to authorities. The suspect was seen trying to hail a cab, and took off on foot once the officers spotted him. Police said they caught up with the suspect on Geneva Avenue.

Brandon Smith, 29, was arrested and charged with unarmed robbery.

This isn’t the first time a suspected bank robber tried to escape the scene in a cab and was thwarted by police. Last month, a man arrested for robbing Citizen’s Bank in South Boston allegedly left in a taxi and hid cash under the seat cushions. In October, two suspects in a Charlestown bank robbery also left in a cab that witnesses later described to police.
