Man arrested after assaulting teen, jumping out of moving car on I-91

A Webster man was arrested Thursday night after he jumped out of a moving car on I-91 southbound in Longmeadow after allegedly assaulting a teenage girl in the back seat, according to the Massachusetts State Police.

Police received a call from one of the occupants of the car around 9 p.m. that the suspect in the backseat was intoxicated and physically fighting with the 16-year-old victim. During the call, the suspect was able to grab the phone and hang up, according to police.

Police said that when the call center returned the call, a passenger told the dispatcher the suspect who had assaulted the victim had jumped from the car.

Upon arrival, troopers found the suspect lying on the shoulder of the breakdown lane, with the car stopped in the breakdown lane a short distance away. The suspect sustained minor injuries and was transported to Baystate Medical Center.

During the investigation, police discovered the group in the car—including the suspect, the victim, a 19-year-old woman, and a 16-year-old girl—were returning from Six Flags amusement park in Agawam, where the suspect had been drinking from a bottle of vodka throughout the day. He also gave the victim drinks from the bottle throughout the day.

The suspect is being charged with charged with domestic assault and battery, intimidation of a witness, procuring liquor for a person under age 21, and an outstanding felony warrant out of Dudley District Court. He was also cited for having an open container of alcohol in a car and a seatbelt violation.

The victim refused to seek an emergency restraining order against the suspect, according to police, and was released to her father’s custody.
