GLOUCESTER, Mass. (AP) — The scuba diver who died off the coast of Gloucester this weekend has been identified as a Belchertown man.
Authorities say 61-year-old Peter Piemonte was diving with several other people on Saturday off Gloucester’s Eastern Point when he went under water and did not resurface within an appropriate time. He was described by the Coast Guard as an experienced diver.
He was unresponsive when he was brought to the surface by one of the other divers.
The Coast Guard and Gloucester Emergency Services responded to the scene and took Piemonte to Addison Gilbert Hospital in Gloucester, where he was pronounced dead.
The cause of death remains under investigation.
