Suspect dead following standoff with police in Lawrence

Massachusetts State Police

A standoff between police and an armed man barricaded inside a Lawrence apartment ended after several hours Tuesday afternoon when police entered the residence and found the man dead.

Lawrence Police Chief James Fitzpatrick said the man shot his girlfriend around noon, and then barricaded himself inside their shared apartment when police arrived, according to The Boston Globe. He said the man shot at the responding officers. The couple’s 4-year-old son was inside the apartment during the incident, but was uninjured, the Globe reported.

Fitzpatrick told reporters at the scene that the man’s girlfriend is being treated for a critical gunshot wound.

The Essex District Attorney’s office said the woman, identified only as a 36 year-old, was transported from Lawrence General Hospital to a Boston hospital. The man was only identified as a 34-year-old.

The boy and a 10-year-old child, who was at school during the incident, are now in custody of the Department of Children and Families, according to the DA’s office.

Lawrence Mayor Dan Rivera said in a briefing earlier Tuesday that police initially responded to a call for shots fired in the area.

“They did exchange fire with somebody in the building,” he said.

The threat was determined to be over around 3:30 p.m. after Lawrence police entered the building, according to state police.
