Two boats destroyed in yacht club fire

An early-morning fire at the Newton Yacht Club destroyed two boats along the Charles River, according to authorities.

Firefighters responded to the blaze at 3:31 a.m, which began on a docked boat at the club, according to the Newton Fire Department.

The fire quickly spread to another boat docked nearby, and officials cut both boats free in order to save the surrounding boats. The closest fire hydrant was about 3,500 feet away on the shore, according to the Newton Fire Department.

Still, some of the docked boats were damaged before the burning boats were cut free.

Officials said they are working to prevent gas and oil from drifting down the Charles. Newton fire officials asked drivers who use Nonantum Road to seek alternate routes during the morning commute.
