Three-alarm blaze destroys multi-family home in Somerville

SOMERVILLE, Mass. (AP) — One man was hospitalized with minor injuries following a heavy fire that destroyed a nine-apartment building in Somerville.

Fire Chief Patrick Sullivan says the three-alarm blaze started at around 9 p.m. Thursday and spread to three residences on Rush Street that are all connected.

Deputy Chief Chris Major says most residents of the three-story building self-evacuated the burning structure. The injured man was hospitalized for minor burns.

Investigators believe the blaze started in a center unit. At least one stairwell collapsed, and firefighters were ordered to exit the home to fight the flames outside. The fire was under control around 11 p.m.

An investigation to determine the cause is ongoing.
