6 rescued from sinking fishing boat in Buzzards Bay

NEW BEDFORD, Mass. (AP) — Coast Guard officials say six people were rescued from a 72-foot fishing boat as it was sinking off the coast of southeastern Massachusetts.

Officials told The Standard-Times that the sinking boat in Buzzards Bay near New Bedford was first reported shortly after 9:30 a.m. Sunday. All six people aboard were rescued. No injuries were reported.

The scalloper boat began taking water as it was returning to New Bedford from a fishing trip. The boat, the Captain Jeff, is from New Bern, North Carolina.

Authorities are investigating why the boat began to sink. Officials said efforts to remove water from the boat were not successful and it was in danger of completely sinking.

The Coast Guard and the multi-agency Buzzards Bay Task Force responded with boats and a helicopter.
