Man fatally struck by commuter rail train in Somerville

Officials say an adult male was struck and killed by a commuter rail train Monday afternoon in Somerville.

According to MBTA Transit Police, officers received a report around 12:20 p.m. that a person had possibly been hit by a train near the Park Street grade crossing.

Officials say the man had been trespassing on the inbound track about 200 yards east of the Park Street crossing, when he was struck by a Fitchburg Line train. The man — whose identity and exact age have not been released — was pronounced dead at the scene.

Transit police detectives, as well as the Middlesex District Attorney’s office, are investigating the incident, but say foul play was not a factor.

At least one inbound train on the Fitchburg Line was stopped at Porter Square and several outbound trains were delayed as a result of the fatality, according to the commuter rail’s Twitter account Monday afternoon.
