NASHUA, N.H. (AP) — A former New Hampshire medical student convicted of sexually assaulting an 81-year-old woman has been sentenced to one month in jail.
The Nashua Telegraph reports that 39-year-old Surya Karri was convicted last month of misdemeanor sexual assault. He was accused of fondling and kissing the woman who approached him about the “For Sale” sign on his car, which was parked in front of her Nashua apartment building.
At Tuesday’s sentencing, the woman said Karri seemed friendly at first, but that changed suddenly.
Karri’s lawyer pushed for no jail time, saying Karri had already “lost everything” including the opportunity to become a doctor.
The judge said Karri wasn’t “sorry for the right reasons.” He was also ordered to perform 100 hours of community service and register as a sex offender.
