Watch the moment Michelle Carter was sentenced in the texting suicide trial
Michelle Carter was sentenced to 15 months in prison Thursday for coercing her then-18-year-old boyfriend Conrad Roy III into following through on his suicidal thoughts in 2014.
Bristol Country Juvenile Court Judge Lawrence Moniz delivered the sentence Thursday, as Carter stood beside her defense attorneys. The now-20-year-old Plainville resident was convicted of involuntary manslaughter last month for her role in Roy’s death.
The trial garnered widespread media coverage for the relentless series of texts Carter sent Roy encouraging him to kill himself in the weeks leading up to his death. However, Moniz ruled last month that it was Carter’s fateful phone call urging Roy to get back in his carbon monoxide-filled truck that ultimately caused his death.
Carter’s legal team is appealing the conviction.
