Maine man awarded $300,000 in dental malpractice suit

AUGUSTA, Maine (AP) — A jury has awarded a Maine man nearly $300,000 in damages in a dental malpractice case.

The Kennebec Journal reports a jury on Monday found Dr. Jan Kippax and Androscoggin Oral & Maxillofacial Surgeons, P.A. acted negligently in the case of 25-year-old Stephen Darnell Jr.

Darnell’s mouth became infected in 2011 after Kippax extracted two of his molars.

Darnell’s attorney, Scott Lynch, had claimed Kippax failed to comply with care standards. Lynch said doctors had to operate on his client’s jaw and place drains in it to draw out pus from the infection.

Kippax’s attorney, Mark Lavoie, had claimed Darnell ignored his client’s discharge instructions and skipped a follow-up visit.

Kippax’s dentistry license had been suspended earlier this year following patient complaints.
