Haverhill High School: Teacher assaulted by 17-year-old student

HAVERHILL, Mass. (AP) — A 17-year-old Massachusetts student is facing charges for allegedly violently assaulting a teacher at Haverhill High School.

School Superintendent James Scully says the attack took place Tuesday morning, and the teacher needed sutures for an arm wound. The Eagle-Tribune reports that no weapon was involved and the student was new to the school.

The assault occurred after the student became disruptive and was asked to leave the classroom.

Scully says police responded and will summon the teenager to court. He says the school will expel the student pending proper disciplinary procedures.

Scully says the attack reflects some of the problems faced by public schools, and it is discouraging to see staff members treated this way.

No names were released.
