Martha’s Vineyard high school student dies in crash

A senior at Martha’s Vineyard Regional High School died in a car crash on the island Friday morning, according to the school.

Jake Baird, 17, of Oak Bluffs, was driving a 1994 Chevrolet K1500 on Middle Road in Chilmark shortly before 8 a.m. when the vehicle left the roadway at a curve and struck a tree, Massachusetts State Police said. Baird was pronounced dead at the scene, and two passengers sustained minor injuries and were taken to Martha’s Vineyard Hospital.

The crash remains under investigation, according to police.

The high school said counselors would be available to students.

“We are saddened by this loss to our school community and will make every effort to help you and your child,” the school said in a statement.
