MEDFORD, Mass. (AP) — Massachusetts officials say a gun ammunition magazine was found at a middle school but went unreported for weeks, leading to the principal being placed on leave.
Medford Mayor Stephanie Burke announced Thursday that McGlynn Middle School Principal Jake Edwards was placed on paid administrative leave.
Officials say a cleaning crew found a magazine containing several bullets in the school auditorium Dec. 29. A custodian locked it up in Edwards’ office. Officials say Edwards may have thrown it out while cleaning his office Dec. 30.
The mayor and police say they weren’t informed of the magazine until last week. Burke called the handling of the incident unacceptable.
Burke says former state Attorney General Martha Coakley will perform an independent investigation.
Edwards didn’t immediately respond to a message seeking comment Thursday.
