The Animal Rescue League announced Tuesday that it is offering a $1,000 reward for information that leads to the return of a 3-year-old dog that was taken from its Boston shelter last week.
The shelter said Nick — short for St. Nicholas — was taken for a walk by a potential adopter on April 8 and never returned.
Alan Borgal, director of law enforcement at the ARL, told reporters Tuesday that Nick, a pitbull-mix, is “very social and friendly.”
“He’s one of the staff favorites — we’re pretty desperate to get him back,” he said. “The person who took him out claims now that they lost the dog, that the dog got away from him.”
Borgal said Boston police have spoken with the individual who took Nick out for a walk and are working to determine if that story is true or not.
“The case is still an active investigation,” Boston police spokesman Sgt. John Boyle said.
The shelter official said nothing like this has happened at the shelter before.
“I think the intent was to come in here and steal the dog,” Borgal said.
Anyone who sees the brown and white dog is urged to call 911 or 311.
