UMass Amherst student found dead in pond in Amherst

The body of a University of Massachusetts student was found in Puffer’s Pond in Amherst on Friday, according to Northwestern District Attorney David E. Sullivan’s office.

Jacob Johnson, 21, of East Bridgewater, was recovered by several local divers and members of the Massachusetts State Police Dive Team at approximately 5:43 p.m. after having been submerged for several hours, according to Sullivan’s office.

Johnson was a senior journalism major at the University of Massachusetts Amherst and had worked for The Boston Globe as a co-op on the city desk from July to December 2017. He was slated to graduate in December after the fall semester, according to UMass officials.
