Police: Saugus woman dies following head-on crash with MBTA bus

The cause and circumstances of the crash remain under “active investigation,” according to police.

A 47-year-old woman who was seriously injured in a head-on crash with an MBTA bus in Saugus on Sunday has died, according to authorities.

MBTA Transit Police announced the death of Kathleen Callahan, of Saugus, on Monday morning.

Police said an initial investigation into the crash indicates that a Route 429 MBTA bus was traveling toward Lynn near 190 Essex St. when it was struck head-on by a Ford SUV being driven by Callahan. There were four passengers on the bus at the time of the crash, which occurred around 3:50 p.m.

The Saugus woman was originally traveling in the opposite lane. Police said it is possible that she struck a parked vehicle, which caused her SUV to veer into the path of the MBTA bus.
