Naked man charged with breaking into Newburyport home, attacking resident

An Amesbury man is charged with attempted murder after he allegedly ran away naked from a Newburyport hospital, broke into a home, and attacked a resident with a hammer Thursday, police said.

Robert J. Girard, 26, of Amesbury was also charged with assault and battery with a dangerous weapon and aggravated burglary, according to a statement from Newburyport police.

Officers were dispatched to Anna Jaques Hospital at 10:49 p.m. Friday for a report of a patient — identified as Girard — who fled after removing his IVs and ankle bracelet, police said. They began their search shortly after.

Around 2:01 a.m. Friday, officers were called back to the emergency department to speak to a resident of nearby Rawson Avenue, who told police a man broke into her home and attacked her partner with a hammer.

Police found Girard, still naked, on Lois Street in Newburyport and arrested him.

The 50-year-old victim was taken to the hospital for treatment and was released Friday, police said.
