For 89 years, Mrs. Mack’s served baked goods to the residents and visitors of Worcester.
On Sunday, the bakery that had been run by three generations of the McAvey family closed its doors for good, the Worcester Telegram reports.
According to the newspaper, a line of customers filled the bakery and restaurant to say goodbye, traveling from Boston, Cape Cod, and Connecticut to get the last brownies, cookies, and pastries from the historic business.
Grainne McAvey, 57, told the Telegram that when she decided, amid some recent health problems, to retire from the business after running the bakery for the last 32 years, none of the 20 grandchildren in the next generation wanted to take over.
“I’m sad to be closing, and I’m relieved,” she said.
