A veteran MBTA employee was arrested by Transit Police for allegedly stealing $5,000 in cash from a backpack a passenger left behind when she got off an Orange Line train at Community College Station earlier this month.

Hakim M. Emmanuel, 42, was arraigned in Somerville District Court Wednesday, where he pleaded not guilty to a single count of larceny over $1,200, officials said. Emmanuel is an inspector who is scheduled to earn $83,304 this year, state records show.

According to police, the passenger boarded an Orange Line train July 10 with the cash in the backpack and then got off the train at Community College. She quickly realized she had forgotten the backpack and turned to a T employee for help.
