Dawn Morris, 32, was working at DJ’s European Market and Deli in Dorchester early Saturday morning, making pastries and Polish doughnuts — known as paczki — when she heard a loud noise.

At first, she thought it was the sub rolls being delivered. But when she looked, she saw a man kicking in the door, trying to get inside her family’s business. She ran into the kitchen, pressed the panic button to call police, and grabbed her phone and car keys. She called her mother and whispered, “someone’s breaking into our store.’’

Within minutes, her father showed up at the scene wielding a baseball bat and chased one of the suspects away on foot. The other suspect, identified as Thien Nguyen, 39, of Boston, was caught and detained by Boston EMS until police arrived. He was arrested and charged with larceny and breaking and entering into a building in the nighttime.
