Dead body found on Mass. Pike in Auburn

Police said the victim had suffered what were described as "severe injuries."

AUBURN, Mass. (AP) — Massachusetts State Police are investigating the mysterious appearance of a dead body on an interstate highway.

A department spokesman says the body on the westbound side of the Massachusetts Turnpike in Auburn was first reported at about 10 p.m. Wednesday.

There is no overpass nearby. Troopers have not located any unattended vehicles in the area and there were no prior reports of pedestrians on the highway.

The victim had suffered what were described as “severe injuries.”

The medical examiner has taken custody of the body to determine the gender as well as the cause and manner of death.


The investigation caused massive backups on the roadway, which was not completely reopened until about 2 a.m. Thursday.
